A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte, Georges Seurat, 1986

Seurat was an impressionist painter who used pointillism – which is thousands upon thousands of tiny little dots to create the painting. “Green” might be made of
many tiny dots of green, and blue, and yellow, and maybe even red.

  1. This is an upper middle class park. Write a detailed description of the people in the painting. What are they doing and why? Why hats? Umbrellas? A monkey? Animals not on leashes? etc.
  2. Create an adventure story of your own (and imaginary) experiences at a park.
  3. The Seurat painting below is called The Bathers. It is working class people on other side of the same lake. Compare the two. Which would you rather do and why?
