Ada Lovelace, Poet of Science

200 years ago, the daughter of Lord and Lady Byron, Ada Lovelace, wrote the first computer program – before there was electricity or a computer to make it work. Working with Thomas Babbage on what they called the Analytical Engine, she wrote a step-by-step for how Bernoulli numbers could be coded for the machine. 200 years later, she has been given a dedicated day by Google.

  1. Write about computers in your life. What do you use computer “devices” to do? – phone, tablet, gaming machine, computer, etc. Get detailed about your favourite things to do? Your frustrations?
  2. If you were going to be famous, write an imaginative description of what you’d like to be famous for.
  3. Write a step-by-step set of instructions for something that seems very simple, such as filling a dishwasher, setting the table, washing the dog, etc.
