Children’s Games, Peter Bruegel the Elder, 1560

Peter Bruegel the Elder was from the Netherlands, and was among the first generation of artists to paint oil paintings of every day life, when all paintings were no longer of mostly religious themes. He painted the activities of peasants which gives us a real window into life in the Netherlands at the time.

  1. Carefully examine an expanded version of this painting and write about the 60 or so recognizable children’s games (most of which are still played over 400 years later).
  2. Write an imagined story of a young person who wants to play a particular sport and the troubles that person has to overcome to get good at it.
  3. Write about any on-line games you play: names, how do they work, why you like them, who you play them with (if anyone.)
