Snap the Whip, Winslow Homer, 1872

Painted in 1872, it is an image of the game sometimes also called Crack the Whip. A group of boys play this rough and tumble game. In the back of the field is the little red schoolhouse these boys attend.

  1. Analyze the picture to explain how the game is played, including what happens after the boy is flung off. Then write the story from the point of view of one of the boys in the image.
  2. Write about games you play at school in the schoolyard, and the skills you develop while playing (taking turns, speed, etc.)
  3. Look at the picture closely and explain how you know that the painting is about 150 years old.
