The Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh, 1889

In December 1888, Van Gogh mutilated his ear. Recognizing what was probably depression, he admitted himself to an “insane asylum” for the wealthy where he had his own bedroom and a separate art studio. Here he created some of his most famous paintings, including The Starry Night.

Find Don McLean’s song, Starry Starry Night… written about this painting.

  1. An alien invites you and a friend to tour the universe. Write about your adventure – what would you like to see?
  2. Exploring the stars. Write down everything you know about the universe, including anything about our exploration of our own solar system (if you wish).
  3. Imagine the perfect room that would inspire your greatest writing and write a description of what would be in it and why.
